13th March - Radium to Canmore

Left the hostel and the temperature was -8 and not a cloud in the sky. Another perfect day. Headed off throught the Kootenay National Park, stopping at the Kootenay River as it was one of the few we have seen that is not frozen over. We made it to Banff at midday and had lunch at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. We walked in and around the hotel. It was like a castle and they even hat castle tours that ran a few times during the day. After Banff we set off to view some Hoodoos. They are erroding sandstone structures that have been formed over 1000s of years.

We finally made it to Canmore and stayed at the fantastic Canadian Alpine Club Lodge. It was a shame we only had one night here. We went for a walk around downtown Canmore and a walking track around the riverside and past a Hydro Power station. We also stopped off at the local Micro Brewery Pub the Grizzly Paw. Cat had a Pint of the Rutting Elk Red and David had a Pint of Grumpy Bear Honey Wheat beer.

Trying this again (deleted first two attempts, can't type, aagh!)

That Grizzly Paw and those beer names sound great. In fact it has just given me a sudden bunch of ideas for a new pub here but based upon our local Sydney environment. The micro brews could be called: Ruddy-N-Ruthless Entrepreneurial Greed Lager; Hoon Fumes Special Petro Bock 8% alc; Surfnazi Super Skeg Filfy Cold Filtered; Bogan Plumber's Cleavage Real Swearjar Ale; not to mention Beefy Yobbo Super Guts Extra Stout with its pub mirror slogan "keeps you even fitter! and hairier!" Whaddaya reckon?

And I thought you'd already seen the Hoodoos a whole bunch of times? In fact I know David saw them at St.George Motor Boat Club 'cause I was there too!

Your photo of the Fairmont Banff Springs is good, it tends to remind me not so much of a castle like, say, Neuschwanstein, but more of the Potala Palace.

Sitting here listening to Roy & HG while reading your trip!
