6 hour bus journey over very rough road. Our first chicken bus minus the chickens as it had been hired just for us.
Many places they were doing road works and it was only single lane with a sharp drop over the edge. Passed many little mud huts, some still in use others in ruin, also many llama heards. We stopped for lunch in a tiny village. The toilets were putrid, no flush. You had to get a scoop of water to do a manual flush. We arrived in Potosi around 4pm. Very steep, narrow roads. The city is situated on the sides of a few hills. It is the highest city of it's size in the world at 4000m above sea level. We were feeling the effects once again, the slight dizzyness and breathlessness. Went out to dinner together to a very nice restaurant. David and I both had a traditional Bolivian dish of meat, chicken, sausage, onion, egg, pepper and gravy over a bed of fried potato. A huge meal all for the princely sum of 32 Bolivianos less than $5 each. We ended up taking a doggy bag and finishing it off for lunch the next day.
9th Breakfast in the hotel included eggs, muesli and yoghurt, juice, tea or coffee and bread with meat and cheese. After a satisfying breakfast we set off with Gui, Vicky and Tanja to explore the City centre. Walked through the markets, similar to the one in Uyuni with cow parts etc. Walked down the boulevard which is full of shops. We also browsed through craft markets where Catriona purchased some little people earings, some long knitted socks, an alpaca scarf/shawl and a drink bottle holder, David purchased the brightest backpack (with typical South American designs) in the markets. All this for under 300 Bolivianos. Visited the main square and a large church where mass was being said. Have taken lots of photos of this pretty, colonial city. Spent the afternoon updating the blog and wandering the streets again. Dinner for Sarah's 23rd birthday at another nice restaurant.
